All State Honor Choir 2013

Recap of 2013 All-State Honor Choirs

2013 California All-State Honor Choirs was a year of adventure and great success!

The adventure started in late-September and early-October when 993 students in our state auditioned for their regional honor choir.  Of those auditionees, 626 were selected to participate in the Coastal, Central or Southern honor choirs.  The top 290 regional honor choir members from 113 schools became this year’s All-State Men’s, Mixed and Women’s Honor Choirs.

Behind the scenes, the three regional honor choir coordinators (Mel Carrillo, Tony Dehner and Tina Peterson) were hard at work with their assistants (Aaron Snell, Alice Palmer and Karen Garrett) to be sure that the students had an incredible experience in November and that all the data then came to me and my assistant (Genevieve Tep) for All-State.  Scores were tabulated, venues were confirmed, forms were collated, music was sent, permission slips were alphabetized and All-State week was upon us.

Our conductors, Dr. Jerry Blackstone, Dr. Rollo Dilworth and Dr. Sharon Paul selected wonderful programs for the students and we were set.  On Monday morning of All-State week, however, Dr. Paul fell and severely injured her hand.  Her doctors needed to perform surgery and would not allow her to travel (Thankfully, Dr. Paul is doing fine and will make a full recovery).  Fortunately, our state is full of talented individuals who are ready and willing to do whatever is needed for our students.  By 5:00 that same afternoon, Dr. Charlene Archibeque agreed to be on the podium in Dr. Paul’s place.  All three conductors and accompanists made beautiful music with the students.  They were inspiring, thoughtful, engaging educators who took our students to a level of musical artistry which will be lasting in the hearts and minds of all who witnessed the process and the product.

The faculty and staff of San Jose State University graciously donated their classroom space and hours of their time so that the choral students of California would have a wonderful experience.  The next time you see Dr. Jeffrey Benson give him a smile and a hug, and thank him for our students.  His time and effort in supporting this event at his university were unparalleled.

Johansen sent 5 students to All-State Honor Choir, an unprecedented percentage of students for a high-school of our size. Much thanks to Ms. Champeaux for preparing them so well.

Capella Palooza!

Sunday, April 28, 2013 5:30PM
Mary Stuart Rogers Theater

Cappella Palooza is the first choir festival of its type in this part of the Central Valley. It features area high school and college choirs performing a program that is fully a cappella, meaning written for voices only, without instrumental accompaniment.

Singing a cappella is musically challenging, requiring advanced aural skills (listening) and a heightened sense of ensemble (teamwork). There are many styles of a cappella choral music, from medieval chant to Renaissance motets and Elizabethan madrigals to vocal jazz and the popular show choir productions of today. The pieces for this debut program were selected by each conductor to suit the experience level and genre preference of each choir.
